What is Flickr:

"Flickr is a photo sharing website and web services suite, and an online community platform, which is generally considered an early example of a Web 2.0 application." - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flickr

"Photo sharing is the publishing or transfer of a user's digital photos online, thus enabling the user to share them with others (whether publicly or privately)." - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo_sharing

Let's take a look:

Flickr Check out the Explore Flickr link to see individual Flickr sites. Notice that the URLs are long with numbers.

Earlville Free Library's photos which they link to off their website

Group Flickr sites to which many contribute:

New York State Libraries Photos of what is going on in New York State libraries.

New York Library Association Photos from NYLA sponsored meetings and conferences.

365 Library Days Project Join if you want to commit to uploading 365! pictures of your library each year.

Libraries and Librarians All libraries and librarians are welcome to post. Tagging images is recommended.

How to and step-by-step demonstration:

In the workshop, watch Diane, Beverly or Nancy create a Flickr (Yahoo) account and upload a picture.

Read all about it at Get Flickr-tastic!

Take the Flickr tour

Start with Signing up for Flickr  and then go on to the other 5 in the Flickr Tutorials Series

Create your own Flickr account (worksheet.txt):

  1. First, put a few pictures on your computer. Use a digital camera or scanner.
  2. Go to www.flickr.com and either set up a Yahoo account or log in using your Yahoo account, then enter  a Flickr screen name (it can be different than your Yahoo ID).
  3. Upload a picture.
  4. Be sure to write down your Yahoo account username and password and Flickr screen name.
  5. Bonus: Select the "Choose your Flickr web address" link and create a better URL to your Flickr site than the default one with numbers. Write it down!

Good principles and practices:

Do NOT upload pictures of other people without permission or of children and make them public. Only upload them to share if you are making them private.

Home work:

  1. Upload more photos
  2. Post to your Blog and provide a link to your Flickr site

There are websites for sharing other kinds of files, such as VIDEO clips and PODCASTS:

VIDEOS

Most famous is YouTube.com

"A video hosting service allows individuals to upload video clips to an Internet website." - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_sharing

PODCASTS

"A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds, for playback on portable media players and personal computers. A podcast is a specific type of webcast which, like 'radio', can mean either the content itself or the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting." - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasts

Here is another site that describes what a podcast is and, if you are really ambitious, how to create one:
